Subject: British £1 notes replacement with g

Hello Pam,

I have just found 2 £1 notes (with g on the back) that my father had kept.   They are in used condition, ie one with folds and the other stained with a tear in the bottom.   Can you give me some idea of how much they might be worth as I understand they are quite rare.

Thanks,

CK

Dear Carol,

Thank you for your email, sorry, they are not rare – the R on the reverse is scarce, but, G – they made over 38million.

They are worth face value in the condition you describe.

We sell mint condition G reverse notes for £18.

Dear Pam,   Thanks for swift reply.   Not that rare at all!   Worth a try.

Hi Pam ,

Just made payment should be in your account within 2 hours .

I really hope to get to a banknote fair or two next year now I am more or less retired and hope to see you there . You won't remember I'm sure but you were actually the first dealer to speak to me when I first started to collect all those years ago

We were in a  small auction room somewhere in London , I had no idea what I was doing , and you and Colin Narbeth made me feel very welcome and for that I am always grateful

Many thanks again and a Happy Christmas to yourself and Pete .

Good evening Pam,

I wanted to express my thanks concerning an online order I had placed just over a week ago. The order consisted of three of the new five pound notes that began circulating in September. I was unable to locate any here in Canada, but Don Olmstead suggested I contact your business. I had placed the order last week and the notes arrived today in perfect condition. I am very impressed, to say the least, with the efficiency with which the order was handled. I shall be looking to you for any futher orders of British notes that I wish to add to my collection. Again, many thanks for a job well done!

All the best,

Hi Pam,

Thank you for your fulsome response, it is appreciated.

I collected some £5 notes as I found their serial numbers interesting, unusual or had personal significance. I incorrectly assumed as there would be only another 99 with the bookended 1s that it may have held some rarity value.

The other numbers were: AA01 180301, AA11 567944 and AK47 911765, but as you say one prefix is as common as any other.

Thanks again for your time.

Dear Norman,

Sorry not rare they made over 30 million of them with a G on the back.  In used condition worth face value.

Dear Pam

Thank you for replying promptly. My father gave it to me a long time ago and told me it was rare. He obviously was wrong.  I don't know who gave him the incorrect information . I am unable to pass this on to him because he died some 35 years ago .

It is so nice to contact a person who is dedicated to their hobby? or profession and to get answers quickly. Thank you once again.

Regards

Norman

Dear Norman,

When these were first found the papers went mad saying they were rare, but, never stated in the first instance that they had to be in mint condition or that millions were printed and even now only worth around £12, but used were only ever worth face value.  People were misled. Thousands were kept by people such as your father.

Keep it as a memento.

Regards

Pam

3.6.16

Hello,

I was wondering if you would be kind enough to offer any guidance you can on this one.

In my possession I have a handful of £1 Notes that I would describe to be in very good condition (I think approximately a dozen or so) that were left by my late father.

According to him they have “incorrect serial numbers”. Back in the 1960’s & 1970’s he worked in a car factory as the wages clerk so I can only presume that he acquired these when making up the wage packets, ensuring that he paid himself the ones with these “incorrect serial numbers”. The bank notes are from this era in time.

I have no idea whether his claim that they have “incorrect serial numbers” are true and would have no idea on how to check this out. I am guessing if they are incorrect in any way that they would be considerably more valuable than a correct note.

Kind Regards

SH

Subject: Re: £1 Notes

Dear Mr H,

Without knowing exactly which £1 notes or their serials, you do not mention what they are, I cannot help.

I might presume you mean the £1 note with QEII on right with different serials top and bottom, probably signed FForde or Page, but, you do not say.

Regards

Pam

Hi Pam,

Apologies I wasn’t overly clear.

I’ve attached some images of the banknotes for you (now I’ve had another look some do look in better condition than others).

I did a bit of research on the internet last night and It looks like these bank notes have serial numbers where there is a random “G” printed on the reverse. I’m guessing that will probably make sense to you.

Thanks

S

Dear Simon,

When your dad collected these they were aware that they were worth money, but, the newspaper articles at the time did not mention that they had to be in mint condition.  They actually made 900million of these and it is the R on the reverse that is worth money.

The well used notes are worth face value and the best condition ones up to £3. The prefixes are normal.

The above is a value only and not an offer to purchase.

Regards

Pam

Hi Pam,

Thank you for taking the time to have a look for me and for your insight.

I may not be sitting on a fortune with these notes but at least I’ve got to the bottom of the mystery surrounding them, which In a way is more important to me.

Kind Regards

Dear Pam,

THANK YOU!! The notes are here today. Six days stuck  in New York customs, but safe and sound and being enjoyably added to my collection. The wait was totally worth it.

Now that a type set is complete I will be growing my collection with some signature sets and varieties. Thankfully never a dull moment = always discovering something new. The Shakespeare I have has him as the watermark. And, nicely enough, I see that there is a QEII watermark for this type that I'll be going after.

I am away from Feb -- to March --. I am going to try to get an order to you before I leave. Otherwise, one will be on the way soon after I return.

Thank you for all of your help. My BOE collection is my pride and joy.

With best regards.

Cheers.

Hallo again Pam;

A happy new(ish) year to you and family and colleagues.

Just a note to let you know that the Peppiatt £100 arrived safely this morning.  What an absolutely stunning example!  Almost as if it had been printed last week.  Must have been stored in a dark safe since the day of issue.  If only all dealers could be just as scrupulous in their assessments and descriptions.

Thank you very much - that's really made my day.

Best wishes,
